When erecting the Bio- and Wellnessresort Stanglwirt, designers focused on natural materials to enhance the Tyrolean architecture. Throughout, wood paneling and furniture abound, with Arolla pine wood showcasing local textiles while brightening guestrooms and shared spaces. But beyond what guests see, wood provides the building blocks of the resort, with wooden beams used in place of steel girders. In addition, wooden blocks and shingles were used, secured with lime mortar rather than cement. Guestrooms are finished with wool carpeting, cotton/linen bed sheets and upholstery, and chemical-free cleaning agents for a safer, more sustainable environment.

A biomass power plant used by the resort has been supplying environmentally friendly warmth and hot water since the 1980s, using natural materials like bark waste from local sawmills. And with the current combustion chamber producing gases low in harmful substances, most of what escapes is sustainable as well. Additionally, a hydroelectric power station helps Stanglwirt obtain eco-friendly, carbon-free energy to further reduce its carbon footprint and water procured from Kaiserquelle spring provides the resort with clean, high-quality water not only for drinking but throughout its swimming pools and saunas. Stanglwirt also partners with Meiko Green for recycling.

Communities both in and outside of Austria are benefiting from the resort’s efforts, as it makes a clear-cut commitment to improving lives around the world. Water bottled from the on-site spring is sold at Stanglwirt, with partial proceeds benefiting African aid organizations. The hotel has already helped build eight wells in addition to a school in Ethiopia; each well supplies 100 households with purified drinking water while 600 children are able to study at the school at any given time. Other causes that Stanglwirt donates to include rainforest regeneration projects, a local ski club, youth sports, and global children's charities.
