Thriving Wildlife
Bengal tigers are one of the last viable wild tiger populations in the world and, although most of andBeyond’s work with animal conservation takes place elsewhere, the impact is felt in Bhutan. Although most of these big cats can be found in India, satellite populations live in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. As poaching and habitat loss continued to heavily affect tigers in the 2000s, an initiative called Tiger Watch was born to aid conservation efforts. This is just one of the wildlife campaigns and organizations supported by andBeyond.
Committing to the Community
Local communities are at the forefront of much of the work andBeyond does. One way that the company has given back in Bhutan is with a donation of land to a local farmer. In return for the space, he is growing vegetables and herbs that can be incorporated into culinary offerings at the lodge. Eventually, the farmer hopes to launch a co-op to support more hotels in the region. In addition, the lodge has hired nearly 80% of its staff from nearby rural villages, providing on-the-job training and new career opportunities.
Environmental Impact
Bhutan is a small country in the eastern Himalayas, known for its steep mountain peaks and tree-covered valleys. As such, it’s covered in forestland, with roughly 65% of the land covered in flora, and is one of the few countries on earth with a carbon-positive footprint. In an attempt to stay aligned with what Bhutan is already doing on its own, andBeyond Punakha River Lodge was built on only 7 of the 50 acres the company owns, as andBeyond plans to construct a small hydropower unit to generate electricity for the lodge.
