We are committed to positive and transformative impact. Here are some ways we do it at andBeyond Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp.

Preserving Resources
Despite water sometimes being plentiful in the Okavango Delta, Botswana faces droughts, and other water scarcity issues that impact wildlife as well as rural communities. The camp partners with Wild Impact (formerly the Africa Foundation) to provide crucial water access in the settlements of Tsutsubega and Gogomoga via the use of boreholes and water barrels that hold up to 91 liters (about 24 gallons), with a goal of providing water within two kilometers of each homestead. In addition, the camp itself runs primarily using a Tesla Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), with 80% of energy consumption being powered by this battery and the rest relying on a generator.
Committing to the Community
Another layer of the collaboration with Wild Impact is the support of the organization’s Community Leaders Education Fund (CLEF), an education program that has been providing financial aid to college-aged students in Botswana as well as Namibia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, and Zanzibar since 1996. In all, the organization has awarded 1,285 scholarships to 855 promising leaders from 62 different rural African communities. As part of the program, a “buyisela,” or community service component is in effect, with students showcasing their gratitude by giving back. CLEF’s impact is huge, increasing earning potential, job opportunities, and uplifting the community.
Building a Better Future
Prior to 2017, children in the nearby town of Sexaxa had to walk up to five kilometers each day, navigating the bush as well as a dangerous stretch of road to make it to school in Matlapana. Luckily, another education-focused aspect of Wild Impact’s efforts was the multi-phased development of Sexaxa Primary School. The project began with two classroom blocks, a kitchen, and bathrooms, with an expansion in 2020 providing another two classroom blocks for additional grade levels. The organization is currently fundraising in hopes of building housing for teacher staff as well as adding additional classrooms for children in pre-school and first grade, an office, and a room for sick children.
