The Posts were one of the first pioneer families to call idyllic Big Sur home, establishing a working ranch that had been in the family for generations before evolving into the Post Ranch Inn. Opened in 1992, it graced the cover of Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the world’s most beautiful resorts and ushered in a new era of award-winning green hospitality. Framed by the craggy Santa Lucia peaks to the east and with unlimited vistas of the Pacific Ocean to the west, the property showcases unique architecture, includes a celebrated dining destination, and integrates the best of Mother Nature into every experience.

Letting Nature Lead
Nature is the lead designer at Post Ranch Inn, whose biophilic architecture connects guests with Big Sur’s beauty at every turn. Buildings crafted with natural materials including stone, wood, and glass blend into the inn’s clifftop perch above the California coast and walls of reclaimed wood enhance guest accommodations – Ocean Houses even feature living green roofs to prevent heat loss and blend into the natural landscape. The property’s power comes from a 990-panel solar array, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 600,000 pounds annually.
Protecting Native Wildlife
Ninety percent of the inn’s 100 acres provides dedicated open space designed to help protect threatened and endangered species, including the Smith’s blue butterfly, California red-legged frog, and California condor. Landscaping practices focus on removing and replacing invasive species with native plantings as part of restoring the natural ecosystem.
Serving Responsibly Sourced Food
Eating well at Post Ranch Inn starts with sustainable seafood and extends to free-range, grass-fed beef, organic poultry, fair-trade organic coffees and teas, and locally grown organic fruits and vegetables, garnered from farmers’ markets and the inn’s on-site Chef’s Garden.
Caring for California’s Redwoods
Post Ranch Inn works to preserve the area’s iconic redwood trees, and has planted more than 150 redwoods and native oaks, another important family of California trees, on its property. When the property was developed, efforts were made to avoid removing any trees, leaving the surroundings in their natural state, and Tree House accommodations stand on nine-foot stilts to help keep root systems safe.
Building a Healthier Community
Community giving pursuits include bringing area businesses together to create an affordable healthcare center for local citizens as well as support for the creation of the Big Sur Sustainable Tourism Destination Stewardship Plan. The inn and its guests also buoy the Big Sur Community Fund, with 100% of the funds providing financial support for local organizations like the Ventana Wildlife Sanctuary, Captain Cooper Elementary School, the Big Sur Health Center and the Big Sur Fire Brigade.
