The six luxury safari tents camp nestles within 60 private acres set along an expansive curve of the Luangwa River, as it carves a broad path through the Luangwa Valley. Directly opposite lies South Luangwa National Park, a.k.a., the “valley of the leopard.” Founded by the late conservationist Norman Carr, Chinzombo has earned accolades for its minimalist, sustainable design that blends local materials and building techniques with vintage accents and a modern sensibility.

We are committed to positive and transformative impact. Here are some of the ways we do it at Time + Tide Chinzombo.

Eliminating Barriers to Education
Forty percent of children in Sub-Saharan Africa do not attend school, and many who do lack adequate academic skills to further their opportunities. Chinzombo partners with the Time + Tide Foundation’s student sponsorship program, which helps children complete their secondary education while providing self-esteem support and counseling. Time + Tide Foundation’s home-based education program also provides individualized learning plans for special-needs students, along with medical treatment and teacher training.
Protecting Zambia’s Wildlife
Time + Tide Chinzombo provides ongoing financial support for Conservation South Luangwa, which focuses on anti-poaching campaigns and works to reduce human-wildlife conflicts, including by promoting garden crops that don’t attract elephants and hippos. The camp also supports eco-education, wildlife rehabilitation, and reforestation efforts through its partnership with the non-profit Chipembele Wildlife Education Trust.
Connecting with Local Culture
Through Chinzombo’s Community, Culture, and Conservation tour, guests can visit a nearby village to meet with its headwomen and learn about local customs. Chinzombo also brings guests to a local Education Center that sheds light on the area’s archaeological findings. The camp’s on-site boutique features traditional crafts made by local women.
Promoting Girl Power
Girls in Zambia face unique challenges to education; for example, nearly 40 percent are married before age 18. Through its partnership with the Time + Tide Foundation, Chinzombo works to empower primary school girls in remote communities through weekly clubs that focus on building self-esteem and boosting literacy skills so village girls can successfully complete their secondary schooling and pursue further education and career opportunities.
Staying Green On-Site
Designed to have minimal impact on its surroundings, Time + Tide Chinzombo’s design features organic and recyclable materials from the region. Plastic water bottles have been eliminated on property; guests receive reusable water bottles upon arrival. In addition, optional walking safaris contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
