Sustainability in Action
We are committed to positive and transformative impact. Here are some of the ways we do it at Arenas Del Mar.

  • Getting Back to Nature

    A major reforestation effort over the last two decades – including some 7,000 native trees and thousands of endemic plants – has transformed this former plantain farm into a thriving nature reserve, 75 percent of which remains untouched. The resort’s electric system is also built underground so as not to disturb wildlife.

  • Hiring and Supporting Locals

    Arenas Del Mar employs an all-Costa Rican staff and hires the majority from local communities – then supports employees with a range of training courses, internal promotions, and even access to healthcare in nearby Quepos. The loyalty is clearly mutual: many staff members have worked at the resort seven years or longer.

  • Going Straight to the Source

    The resort stocks its boutique with locally made crafts, serves hyper-local organic coffee, and supports the Dock to Dish program, forging bonds with local fishers to provide fresh, sustainably caught seafood. It also maintains an on-site hydroponic garden, which produces many of the vegetables served at its restaurants.

  • Giving Back Beyond the Resort

    Twice a month, staff volunteers clean up a major nature trail inside Manuel Antonio National Park, as well as the stretch from the park to Espadilla Beach. At the neighboring Sabalo School, resort and guest donations help provide essential classroom supplies and fund eco-education programs.

  • Keeping Costa Rica Green

    Arenas Del Mar’s focus on sustainability is evidenced throughout the resort – from solar panels that heat hot water and a ban on single-use plastics, to a vermiculture-based compost system that recycles organic waste.
