The vision of actor Marlon Brando and resort owner, Richard Bailey, The Brando is designed to leave the lightest possible footprint on its home of Motu Onetahi and the Tetiaroa atoll. This starts with its use of local, renewable, and recycled building materials. Advanced water conservation and waste management systems also helped the resort achieve LEED Platinum certification for its entire campus from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Helping fulfil Marlon Brando’s dream of developing a “university of the sea,” an Ecostation, created by the resort for the nonprofit Tetiaroa Society, hosts visiting scientists who work on – and teach guests about – critical marine research and conservation initiatives. Guests can give back through hands-on experiences such as helping to release fish larvae and baby turtles.

The Brando’s ongoing financial support for the Tetiaroa Society also helps protect the area’s ancient Tahitian archaeological sites and other “Sacred Assets” of Polynesian Heritage. The partnership, for instance, recently helped restore and enhance a cultural center on Motu Onetahi that serves as a ceremonial site. Local staff also provide educational programs for guests on Polynesian traditions, including Ukulele lessons, coconut palm weaving, and Tahitian dance.

Solar panels provide most of The Brando’s power along with all hot water for both guests and staff. Toward its goal of carbon neutrality, The Brando also harnesses deep-sea water rather than using harmful hydrofluorocarbons to naturally cool its tropical villas with its innovative Sea Water Air Conditioning system.

Menus feature Polynesian-inspired dishes, locally caught fish, and fresh fruits and vegetables grown in The Brando’s palm-shaded organic gardens.
